The Slovak Republic, or Slovakia for short, is a republic in Central Europe. It is landlocked and borders the Czech Republic to the northwest, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south and Austria to the southwest. Since 2004, Slovakia has been a member of the European Union and NATO. Recent government reforms, access to European Union funds, and targeted investment in infrastructure and public works make Slovakia one of the fastest growing economies in Central and Eastern Europe. The population of the country is about 5.5 million inhabitants and unemployment is 5.3%. Most often, citizens mainly from Eastern Europe are looking for jobs, attracted by safe working conditions, a guarantee of timely payments and an opportunity for career development. We will take a closer look at the popular job vacancies, minimum and average wages, payroll taxes, and cost of living in the country.
Minimum wage
Depending on the degree of responsibility and the complexity of professional activity, the minimum wage in Slovakia starts from 700 euros per month. The minimum wage can be increased for qualified professionals and staff working in difficult conditions with health risks. Employers are obliged to pay wages not less than the minimum set.
Average salary
According to the current data of the local statistical office, the average salary in Slovakia in 2023 is 1,393 euros per month.
There are significant differences in pay for men, who receive around 1,539 euros and women 1,264 euros per month. The region of Bratislava differs significantly in salary from other cities of the country. The most prestigious vacancies are also concentrated in this area.
The highest incomes are received by specialists in the field of agriculture, finance, medicine, information technology and transport.

Note that the unemployment rate in Slovakia is around 5.3% and the income tax rate in 2023 ranges from 19% to 25%.
Deductions from salary depend on the employee’s salary, the number of children, bonuses received and possible fines. In addition to taxes, there are two types of payroll deductions in the country:
§ social – 9.4%;
§ health – 4%.
The net salary after all taxes and deductions is about 65% of the salary.
Pensions are paid from the general and the collection fund, to which 9% of the salary is transferred every month. The savings fund is owned by the employee and guarantees him pension benefits. The amount in the account can be inherited if it cannot be used for the rest of life.
Cost of living in Slovakia
Utility tariffs are available in Slovakia. Locals spend about 25% of their income on their payment. A family of 4 pays an average of 300 euros per month for all services:
§ Gas, including individual heating – 130 euros.
§ Electricity – 50 euros.
§ Hot water – 50 euros.
§ Cold water – 20 euros.
§ Cleaning of the territory – 20 euros.
§ Internet – 10 euros.
The rent of a two-bedroom apartment costs depending on the neighborhood from 600 to 900 euros.
The cost of food is low:
§ domestic and imported fruits cost from 1.5 to 2 euros;
§ vegetables 0,9 to 1 euro;
§ Chicken can be bought from 7 to 8 euros.
Prices are for 1 kilogram.
You’ll have to pay 50 cents to ride the bus once. People who regularly use public transport prefer to buy a monthly card at a price of 27 euros.
